Vaka Leo Voices Consortium

During 2021 we were privileged to work alongside John and Judy McCaffery of Waka Aotearoa Education, and other partners as members of the Vaka Leo Voices Consortium. Below are some highlights of that work and you can see more about the work of the consortium here.

Blessed with Bilingual Brains

The Vaka Leo Voices mission is to support quality, evidence-based teaching and learning in Pasifika bilingual programmes.

Our vision is all Pasifika learners are bilingual and biliterate

PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT #

Work cooperatively to promote, develop and apply greater evidence-based knowledge and expertise about Bilingualism, Bilingual/Immersion Education among parents, communities, educators, and officials.

WHAT WE ARE ABOUT #

VLVC is a group of Bilingual/Immersion units/Schools, ECE and Pasifika & Research Educational Organisations, Pasifika Whanau and Church groups that work together to support, develop and enhance the knowledge of bilingual education to:

  • Build closer sustainable links between Pasifika language ECE’s and their Bilingual Primary School units
  • Create links between Pasifika families and Bilingual programmes so more children enter bilingual /immersion classes in schools.
  • Develop Bilingual/Immersion programmes to reach the 50% minimum requirement of teacher use as the medium of curriculum instruction.
  • Explore and report on what needs to happen to support bilingual teaching and programmes in schools.

Long term we will be working with schools and ECE to develop “Realm Language Bilingual Immersion Programmes”
