Maraetai Beach School + Skylabs NZ
For this project, Maraetai Beach School partnered with Skylabs NZ to combat light pollution on the Pōhutukawa Coast.
More than 30 students in Years 4–8 measured light pollution levels and assessed their impact on the environment, health and astronomy.
The students designed their own affordable light sensors, prototyping their designs using 3D printers. They used these to measure light pollution throughout east Auckland's Pōhutukawa Coast. The data they collected will help to guide strategies for building community awareness and creating solutions for sustainable lighting reduction.
The school hopes to ignite students' passion for science through stargazing events, telescope training and talks from inspiring scientists, ultimately empowering them to advocate for dark sky preservation.
