AUT + Aorere College
Auckland University of Technology (AUT) led a unique research project spanning 8 months in partnership with Aorere College. The project's 25 participants all took Level 3 Biology.
The project began with the students joining a research expedition to Mahurangi Harbour aboard an AUT vessel. During the expedition, the students used cutting-edge underwater sensors to collect data on ocean health.
In addition to analysing the collected data, the students shared their findings with their whānau and collaborated with local primary schools to foster a more ocean-literate community.
AUT environmental scientists worked closely with the students to extract and analyse the data, prompting discussions and questions around contributors to marine environmental health and why long-term monitoring is critical. In addition to analysing the collected data, the students shared their findings with their whānau and the wider school.
Overall, the project ignited a passion for marine science in the participants and highlighted the importance of technology in understanding marine and climate issues.
