Creativity is a vital component of our lives. It enriches every stage and phase, reminding us of our capabilities. When we reflect on some of our greatest endeavours, creativity is likely a key component. Whether we were navigating out of — or through — a tricky situation; fixing something that broke at the worst possible time; or finding new ways to connect with others, creativity plays a crucial role.

Creativity is essential for children's development, playing a crucial role in the way they think, process information, interact and respond to others. Creative activities encourage exploration and experimentation, which help foster the problem solving and critical thinking skills vital to all aspects of life.

Creativity also provides a safe outlet for self-expression, a dynamic that helps children articulate their inner thoughts and develop a strong sense of identity. Moreover, it nurtures curiosity and a love of learning, inspiring children to ask questions, explore new ideas and enjoy lifelong discovery.

Schools are often on the receiving end of criticism when it comes to education. Many accuse traditional education of stifling creativity. As with any criticism fired out in blanket statements, it implicates the many who do the opposite. It can also deflect responsibility from the many other influences in a young person’s life. The home environment presents many opportunities for problem solving and critical thinking.

'Once upon a time', Kiwi kids were renowned for this. The problem is simple — TIME. Of course, the solution is not easy. It does take time to include children in problem solving and critical thinking tasks. Board games and card games were what many of us grew up with. And that was after a full day of sport or running amok with kids across the neighbourhood.

If we want a nation of curious minds, we must all take responsibility for providing the environments that foster this.
