4 ways to reconnect with your teenager during COVID-19 lockdown

Posted on 14 April 2020

While lockdown can be stressful, it can be a good time to reconnect with your teen.

Support your teen to be more positive and less likely to drift into negative behaviours.

Here are 4 research-based practices you can do:

1: Eat dinner together - Not in front of TV or with devices, but purposely share a meal together and talk.

2. Be home when your teen goes to bed - Finish each day reinforcing how much you love them. If you have to be at work, take 5 minutes to Facetime.

3. Take a genuine and caring interest in what’s happening in their lives - Create one on one times and let them talk, eg. do the dishes together, go for a walk, fix the car. Make sure they know you will be there for them no matter what.

4. Get to know their friends - Teen friendships are powerful influencers. While you can’t choose your teens friends its good for them to know you are being lovingly watchful

So have a go and see what a difference it can make.
